How Old Were You . . .

When you figured out that Buck Owens and Grandpa Jones were the cool ones on Hee Haw?

I was too young to think anyone on Hee Haw was "cool."

That's kinda the point. As a teenaged metalhead in the 70's, Hee Haw was the bane of my existence. I really, really hated that show (still do, for the most part). I used to try to latch on to Roy Clark, because at least he had "chops".

Much, much later (late 80s), when I started listening to country music again (I was actually raised around a lot of country music), I became a Buck Owens fan. When I saw him on Hee Haw, I thought he was hopelessly square.

I heard some Grandpa Jones clawhammer banjo tunes in the 90s, and was very surprised. That was the most "punk" sounding country/bluegrass I've ever heard (fast, raw, and trashy).

But I know how you feel about Country music generally.

Actually, I just meant that I didn't think of anything as "cool" when Hee Haw was on TV (in syndication, no less). I was probably 5, so "cool" wasn't yet part of my vocabulary. Nonetheless, I do remember having the sense that the show was corny.

I wouldn't say I am opposed to country music, generally. I don't have a lot of it in my collection. But there's stuff I like. Grandpa Jones is pretty cool although I hear the "real" bluegrass players think of him as pop.
