Prelude: Thoreau

This American government, -- what is it but a tradition, though a recent one, of endeavoring to transmit itself unimpaired to posterity, but each instant losing some of its integrity?  -- Henry David Thoreau, "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience"
As is ever the ultimate function of a system - to propagate itself.  Are we really surprised that the Gingrich "revolution" abandoned term limits before the victory parties were even over?

This is a very pessimistic view of things, but Thoreau is also entirely accurate!
